Welding Techniques for Refractory Metals

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding

An inert gas, such as argon or helium, is used to shield the weld pool from contamination.

Electron Beam Welding (EBW)

Electron beam welding is a high – energy – density welding process that uses a focused beam of electrons to melt the metal. EBW is particularly well – suited for welding refractory metals because it can generate the high temperatures required to melt these metals quickly and efficiently.

EBW is often used for welding thick sections of refractory metals, such as tungsten and molybdenum components. The process is carried out in a vacuum, which prevents oxidation and contamination of the weld. EBW produces deep, narrow welds with high strength and minimal distortion, making it ideal for critical applications in aerospace and nuclear industries.
